I met this girl like 8 years ago in my tennis class, fast forward to now after talking on and off over those 8 years, nothing really memorable or interesting, we started dating recently, we've been on 3 dates and all of a sudden morning she texts:

Love You Baby

Dafuq do I say to that? I've though about:
- Did you mean to send that to me?
- That seems a bit sudden.

- Woah, moving a little quickly there!
- Thanks.

And yes, option 3 is to just let it be and not say anything. The last thing she texted me was a couple days ago, pretty much saying "let me know when you want to hang out next".

that wasnt a real "I Love You" - that might be a bit misconstrued. I have love for a lot of my friends. Dont say shit, hang out with her again and if she says those 3 words then you can worry. Hell I tell my close guy friends I love them too sometimes. And remember, this can be your response if you are a bassist...

She obviously likes you a lot, and she might even love you - but you can't be 100% certain just because she texted it. This could have been a casual "I really dig you", or it could have been a serious "Oh god I love you and I want to have your babies."

How do you feel about her? Might you be in love, or are you just enjoying her company? Answer back with plans for another date and see where it goes. Just don't be afraid to be honest with her.

You know, it might be the right response, but I just have a REALLY hard time ignoring the fact that she said the L word, not as in I love lamp or I love race car, she said "love you". The last thing I texted her was: "I'll see if I can think of something", meaning I'd think of something fun for us to do next time we hang out. The next thing most people say, even if you are dating them is not: love you baby.

But yeah, I could ignore it and just say: Want to hang out on and go ?

It's just so hard to move passed that without knowing if it was meant playfully or seriously.

I mean it sounds like you and her kind of know each other maybe pretty well kinda. But you also said you were talking on again off again for 8 years, and then suddenly dating, an only on three dates.

In my professional experience, anyone who says the "love you" bit and rather suddenly and unprovoked (as in first thing in the morning, not been dating for a while, never been said before); those relationships usually end with bricks through car windows, your favorite hoodie on fire, punctured tires, gratuitous lies about you having herpes, etc.

Let that one be, but ask when she'd like to hang out again—i.e. just keep moving along at your normal pace, go on another date, see how things are going. You don't need to create a giant issue out of what could be, as others pointed out, a fairly casual use of the phrase, or intended for a different friend. Texts lack all context. Hang out in person and see what happens. And if you like her and want to keep seeing her, but she's moving too fast, say so, in person, kindly.
